Hey, how’s it going everyone? This is the Anime Man! I’m sure this particular rumor has spurred around so much on every social media page imaginable for you to not be shocked at the fact that Netflix just released its own original Death Note live-action movie God help us all Having no idea was probably gonna be a hot topic within the AniTuber community for the next couple of weeks I thought I would also throw my own two cents in. A brother’s gotta stay relevant somehow all right But what I was originally planning to do was instead of shitting all over the movie ruthlessly for apparently being Well shit. I was gonna try and take the opposite route and make a video defending the Netflix Death Note live-action movie for what it is because without a doubt after watching this movie. I can conclude that. Yes This movie is fucking horrible. I know I was supposed to be this psychological, horror, thriller, crime drama series But I was ROFLing so hard at some points from the sheer retardedness of this movie that I actually kind of forgot halfway through what the fuck kind of movie I was trying to watch. But keep in mind that while I say that I don’t think this movie deserves a straight-up 0/10, and because of this I decided to create a little think piece of why I think this movie is utterly terrible but also at the same time why it might be kind of amazing. And don’t worry this video will be spoiler free or at least a spoiler free as I can make it such an old and popular series I don’t even know what’s considered spoilers for this anymore. Spoilers: it has a note of death. Let’s begin by saying this: I think the movies pretty fucking garbage if I were to give it any such score out of ten then I would most likely give it a value that is below the average: 5/10. One of the biggest issues about the movie that I saw a lot of people complaining about was the fact that it derails so much from the original manga and anime series Yes, they do call it a “Netflix original”, but let’s be real it’s still an adaptation Meaning it has to in one way or another stick to the roots of the source material that it came from and you know what I might be the first person to say this but I think they actually did a pretty good job at that No, I’m serious. Don’t look at me like that… Definition of adapt: “make something suitable for a new use or purpose; modify; alter a text to make it suitable for filming, broadcasting or the stage”. What a lot of people misunderstand about an adaptation, is that they think it needs to be this perfect frame-by-frame replica of the original source material Which is absolutely not true. If a movie did such thing it wouldn’t be an adaptation That would just be lazy rewriting. So I like to give at least some props to the directors for even having the balls to change around the story and characters so much, so so that it can fit the scheme of the audience it’s trying to present itself to, and that’s the second and primarily big point that I want to address in this video is the difference of audience. I call this fact out months ago, when I did a video dissecting the first controversial trailer of the movie. This movie is obviously not meant for people like you and I who have a clear understanding of the Death Note universe and have read and watched the manga the anime and every single other canon iteration of the franchise instead it’s clearly meant for an audience who has no idea what the series is about, who don’t read and watch as much manga and anime as the rest of us, and who probably have no interest in doing so in the first place And that’s why they ultimately had to change the scheme of the movie and the genres and characters and ultimately the entire story of the movie to fit that scheme so that it could be successful to that particular audience I mean if you think about it it’s already hard enough to try and squeeze a hundred and eight extremely heavy dialogue chapters of the manga into 100 minutes of screen time, but what’s even harder is trying to cram the context of this social psychological warfare between Light and L and all the other characters in between in an easy-to-understand and digestible structure for an audience that most likely isn’t used to this kind of storytelling and unfortunately because of this the movie went from this intelligent psychological crime drama to this extremely dumbed down gory gritty horror crime school romance? I get to be fair the whole school romance undertone that was going on between Light and Misa… or Mia? I don’t know why they changed the name here I thought misa is pretty easy to pronounce was pretty fuckin’ cheesy all around and quite bullshit to sit through for an hour and a half, because the way that this relationship played out in the manga was this really interesting example of Light’s manipulative and cunning side, but in this movie it was like watching a gory version of Twilight, which doesn’t make things better. Like not to give any spoilers away and I’m not making shit up, but in one of the final scenes of the movie: There’s this really dramatic slow-motion shot and while this whole dramatic scene is happening. They’re playing Chicago’s “I don’t want to live without your love”. While the movie fades into the credits with -I’m not kidding- “The power of Love” by Air Supply This is a Death Note movie motherfucker, not The Notebook, but now they’re on the topic let’s actually talk about the soundtrack because I actually think this was one of the more stronger points of the movie and now I’m not talking about the previous examples but rather the dark atmospheric drones and the almost electro infused soundtracks throughout the action scenes which reminded me a lot of cyberpunk styled sci-fi anime and movies, I think actually added a really nice atmospheric and tense scene to the thriller genre that existed, which is -you know- what Death Note is all about, it is ultimately a psychological thriller and can we talk about the directing and cinematography in this movie because Wow, there are a lot of good fucking shots in this movie -I’ll tell you what- The large use of the dutch tilt and slow motion were really effective in bringing out that thriller and horror vibe to the whole movie, and the city landscapes and settings and a lot of the scenes were actually pretty cool Hell, even Light’s room was pretty accurately portrayed from the original manga onto the big screen regardless of the setting change from Japan to Seattle. I still don’t know why they decided to move to seattle of all cities Not that I’m saying there’s anything wrong with that, but why Seattle? No offense, Seattle, I love you And you know what ultimately after finishing this movie. I can say that the acting Surprisingly wasn’t all that cringey Especially when you compare it to any of the japanese Death Note live-action adaptations I think the biggest problem that was prevalent within the Japanese Death note live action adaptation was that they were so infatuated with the fact that, this is based of a manga and anime, that their movements and their acting and dialogue would just so anime-inspired that it became unnatural and corny, because -newsflash- nobody fucking acts like that And if they do they probably have to be put down by a Death Note So hopefully you can see that the directors and producers did actually put a lot of time and care into this passion project of this, because this is exactly what that is It’s a passion project. There are a lot of people criticizing Netflix saying: “Oh, they’re just dick riding off a popular IP and this is nothing, but a cash grab!” Which, yes, may be true I’m not saying that is the case or not, but logically speaking if I were the director I wouldn’t put a fucking $40,000,000 budget on a “cash grab” It’s clear that the directors and producers had the intention of creating something new from a franchise that already has so many iterations of itself. I mean there’s already five full-length live-Action adaptation movies from Japan, a full-length J-drama TV series, and a fucking Death Note Musical. You think this movie was ridiculous? Go check out that musical, that is just strange, to say the least. But let’s not steer away from the fact that, yes, they did change a lot of things in this movie from the original series. Like how Light and Misa’s characteristics are literally swapped over in every way possible with, Misa or Mia being the more intelligent cunning and manipulative one, who tricks and betrays ever want to claim her virtuous justice; and Light being a little bitch boy who screams like a little girl seeing Ryuk for the first time *LAUGHS* I can’t tell you how much I laughed my ass off when I saw that scene for the first time Monty Python should take notes from this movie because this really shined a “light” on what true comedy is. -No pun intended-. And hey, remember a while back when that whole “Whitewashing” controversy was happening with L being portrayed by the black actor Keith Stanfield? And hey, remember people complaining about it after the movie came out? Of course not because -surprise-: Nobody gives a shit, the movie still sucked. Not even an Asian actor casted as Watari could save this movie from its ultimate demise This is why for the longest time I’ve never really cared about who is casted in a live-action adaptation where the story involves characters that need to be a certain race or gender: Ghost in the Shell’s Kusanagi Motoko was casted by Scarlett Johansson, who is clearly not Asian But -guess what?-, nobody gave a shit after the movie came out because the movie still sucked regardless of if he casted an Asian actress. If anything, I actually really liked Keith Stanfield’s portrayal of L Especially in the introducing scenes of L into the movie. His calm composure, his speech pattern, even the way he moves his body was all pretty spot-on from the original manga; so needless to say elle’s entry into the movie was this shining light of hope for existing Death Note fans Especially considering the movie up until that point was just a ridiculous shit storm of total character destruction and plot holes But then of course for all of you who did watch the movie up until the end you would know that Mr. Stanfield doesn’t quite consistently keep his portrayal of Ryuuzaki to the likes of the manga and anime, not because of his acting skills but because of the moron who wrote his script. I don’t know if it was that time of a month But L certainly seem to be a lot more pissed off and moody than what I remembered him to be PMS effects geniuses too One aspect of the movie though, I did really enjoy and that I heard a lot of people really enjoyed, was Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of Ryuk. Let’s just say the CGI definitely stepped itself up considering Ryuk from the original 2006 Death Note looked like a white potato with googly eyes I think Dafoe’s performance really made Ryuk be this more demonic figure compared to the original manga, which I actually thought was very fitting considering the movie tended to shift towards a more horror-esque genre; his core personality was still there, but he just seemed more mean towards Light I don’t know, maybe it’s because the Light in this movie is just a hundred times dumber in a thousand times less chilled out and cool in the original series -case in point- (AHH) Now, there are so many more points I can nitpick about this movie I can give you at least a top 5 “biggest plot holes” and even a top 5 “Why the fuck did they do that” moments in the movie? But I actually recommend you guys to go check out the movie for yourself instead, and no, I’m not sponsored But that would be really nice hey Netflix *call me* Because in all honesty, yes This movie sucks dick, but you know what I still quite enjoyed watching it I think what made this movie a little bit more enjoyable than otherwise, was the fact that I actually stopped thinking about the fact that this movie is a Death Note adaptation, and instead just watched it as a stand-alone horror crime drama movie; because that’s exactly what it is It’s not a Death Note adaptation anymore at this point It’s just a movie that shares a lot of the same ideas But is ultimately a movie that is trying really hard to get noticed by Death Note-senpai What I actually found the most interesting was the comments that were left by Ōba Tsugumi and Obata Takeshi, the original creators of the Death Note manga, who upon viewing the movie for themselves. Actually praised it by saying “In a good way, it both followed and diverged from the original work so the film can be enjoyed, of course by not only the fans, but also by a much larger and wider audience” And that’s the biggest defense I have towards this Netflix Death Note movie for those people who just constantly shit all over it for not being exactly the same as the original manga and anime. It purposefully changed itself, so that it can appeal to a wider audience Sure, in return, it did reap what it sowed; and it got like a lousy 41% on Rotten Tomatoes But hey, at least it had the balls to be different, and for that I actually praised the directors and producers for doing something interesting and giving us something a little bit more interesting than just a standard Death Note adaptation But there’s also rumors that director wants to make a sequel film, even maybe 2 sequel films And you know what if we get to see two more unintentionally hilarious Death Note movies, then I say: “Bring it on biatch!” So yeah, that’s pretty much all I have to say about the Netflix Death Note movie. Will I watch it again? Eh, sure. Is it a good movie? *Alien greeting* Not really. but am I glad that it exists? Yeah. If more people can start from movies like this in advance on to its original manga and anime series Then maybe more people start to see how much more superior and how much more cool and awesome manga and anime in general actually is And as someone who wants to share their love for anime and manga, and who wants to share the amazing world that is the manga and anime world to as many people as I can; I couldn’t ask for anything more But guys let me know what you think about this. Did you like the movie? Did you hate the movie? What do you think of some points they could have changed about the movie to make it any better? What are some core aspects about the movie that made you think it was as good or bad as you thought it was? I’m guessing there’s gonna be a lot of AniTubers who are gonna be talking about this movie if not already So I recommend you guys go check out all of their other videos you know support all the AniTubers and Listen to what they have to say about the movie and then come back to me and let me know all your thoughts and that kind of stuff in the comments below. And hey, if you enjoyed this kind of video then maybe go follow me on Twitter and recommend me some other anime movies you want me to rip apart, but yeah, for the meantime Rest in peace Light Turner, it was good knowing ya. At least Ryuk is still cool. Anyways guys, thanks for watching, as always like and favorite if you enjoyed, subscribe for more anime banter And I’ll see you guys next video of whatever I make. Keep watching anime. じゃあね
What if this movie was a prequel or sequel to the manga/anime? (ALERT: Don't get trigerred).
My mom and sister watched the movie and I've been pestering them to watch the anime for weeks.
Joey get out of here with your Google dictionary, there was so many plot holes and light Yagami' s name is now Turner.
I had never seen death note when I saw the movie, and maybe that is why I enjoyed it as much as I did. I knew the core concepts of death note–have to be living under a rock to not–but I'd never SEEN it. This movie made me want to see what this was based on. In that way, I think it succeeds as an introduction into Death Note.
I'm sorry Joey, but I thought that the "portrayal" of L, was the "Death," of this movies. It was horrifying.
This is a Deathnote movie
Not The Notebook
I DON'T WANNA LIVE WITHOUT YOUR LOVE, I DON'T WANNA FACE THE NIGHT ALONE!
you guys just wait until the promised never land anime will come out. That will definitely be the new deathnote
In that sequel, Light Turner in prison. Just saying his probably going get caught.
I couldn't help but keep replaying Light's scream over and over again. Comedy gold.
HOW DARE YOU
…..I liked the musical….
Death Note's not my type of anime, but I saw this movie was available on Netflix and thought "ooooh, Death Note fans are gonna hate it!" I thought Anime America's review was an interesting take on it, I'll see what the Anime Man thinks.
This was an interesting take thanks for this. And I’m glad you also don’t give a shit about the casting because at the end of the day, it didn’t mattered who they casted, the movie would still be terrible. The white washing controversy I think distracts from the main issue of the movie and that is that it changed the core themes of the show and changed the core aspects of the characters. Asian actors and being in Japan doesn’t make a difference in Death Note’s case, it could be any major city around the world honestly. The creative liberators they took with Light, L, and Misa, and changing this from a psychological cat and mouse thriller to a final destination rip off I think completely backfired.
The real bad part of the movie is L going in public.
I watched this movie after this video and honestly I quite enjoyed it, the acting was pretty good, the writing wasn't terrible, the cinematography was great, the soundtrack other than the examples you listed was very good, the cgi on ryuk was actually really well done, and as much as it diverts from the original the film itself actually isn't as terrible as you thought, or at least in my opinion, it stands on it's own as a fairly decent film and an enjoyable one at that, to all death note fans I suggest watching this without thinking of the anime or manga or any of the live action adaptations, if you go in like someone who's never watched or read death note then you might be pleasantly surprised at this film not being complete trash
I actually didnt hate it. Its certainly a bad Death Note adaptation, I assume, but Ive never seen or read Death Note beyond the first episode, and I dont intend to. Its certainly not a good movie per say, but I dont think it belongs in the same category as Dragon Ball Evolution, the live action FMA movie, or the live action The Last Air Bender (which we'll count anyway even if the source material isnt actually japanese), its definitely a few levels above those.
L running best running
They should've thought up a better surname that goes well with Light.
Yeah, I remember that L in the movie was probably the best part of it.
Anyone else here noticed the way he says "Ryuk" sounds like "Duke"? xD
well i was writing anime series down.. and that included death note and a boy from the class came over to me and said ''Death note? from netflix? THAT WAS SO GOOD!'' (god save me, no one on my school watches anime) and i just replied ''It's shit! i was writing down the anime!'' and he just looked shocked.. ups said that a little too harsh
wI hate how they completely change Light’s character
If you like Steins;Gate then go watch the ADV LIVING. It's a theatrical play. I personally enjoyed it. All the actors actually look and sound like the anime but it was meant to sound anime ish and i worked for a play.
I find it fascinating how people seem to forget how batshit and ridiculous the initial premise was and still is and how painful it is for most people who don't immediately buy into this shit to see how the author makes characters seems smart on no other virtue than them being right – which, in a book, where the author can decide anything they want, it's not hard to make any character correct. The leaps of logic still blow my mind. But, hey, so long as it makes sense in retrospect.
The movie itself is good, but only if it's not associated with the original.
I hated it because the first 5 minutes is just people screwing. LIKE JUST GET TO THE POTATO CHIP SCENE PLEASE I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS
L : This movie gave me cancer
wouldnt know where to start, i get its an adaptation but dont screw with lead characters to much, so much that the character dynamic just doesnt work, maybe have light in the movie be a genuis college drop out, have a resentment issue that the criminlas and 'morons' run th world, and thats where he gets his god complex? one or 2 character twists are enough, otherwise they become unrecognisable, like what happened in this movie
Williem Dafoe killed it
L's not even Asian in the manga…or he's like 1/4 Japanese at most if I remember.
42%…people act like that's bad, but that's nearly half the people watching that liked it.
the movie was shit but it was pretty funny
I love the way AnimeMan reviews stuff he trys to balance between The good and Bad
If you want to watch some REAL Deathnote, guess what? It's finally available on NETFLIX!
Come on people, let's be real. It wasn't a crime super natural movie…It was a comedy. Lowkey I was already laughing half way through it because of how confused I was.
I didn't realize this was filmed in my city wtf
I had actually done a Misa cosplay after the movie came out, and my brother (who hates anime) saw an edited picture of me with the Death Note in that cosplay, and saw "Death Note" and said he saw that movie and loved it and my response was "… why would you betray me like this?"
So basically, it would have been good, if it was a parody and not an adaptation.
I actually started watching it but quit halfway cuz I wanted to watch the anime version of death note and it was so different and watching your video made me realize the good side of it being different but I still think the anime version was seriously the best, I just love!! The drama and the intense emotions but well I will give Netflix a chance lol
I like death note (the anime), a lot.
And I tried to watch the movie only as a movie, not like an adapt.
It was still a boring movie to me, to be honest 😅 and it had very bad effects
… Yes, I'm talking about how everyone is made of jello when they die
My problems with adaptations arent that they make changes (cuz news flash, every good adaptation of something into movie form HAD to change something just because of the amount of time thye have to tell the story. even the 38 hours of LotR that peter Jackson gave us) it's when the changes negatively effect something or seem like a pointless change. Like, why COULDN'T Light be smart and manipulative and Misa being a murderous fangirl of his? Why did they have to somewhat switch that. It basically could have and should have been Sherlock Holmes vs Moriarty, but from the PoV of Moriarty and with a supernatural twist (IE "Moriarty" having a magic notebook that allows him to kill anyone he wants). Like, we get Sherlock Holmes movies and TV shows all the god damn time, and they tend to be decently successful if done competently…why make Moriarty a dumbass and add in a romance subplot that shouldn't have been there.
I don't. Changes like these, to a lesser extent, remind me of the super Mario brothers movie. The directors wanted to make a cyberpunk post apocalyptic sci-fi movie and basically already had the movie they wanted to do set in stone, but couldn't get the idea off the drawing board…then they got the rights to do a Mario movie and just took their idea and added Mario to it. It wans't a Mario movie, it was some other movie that happened to have Mario in it. Now while I don't think thats what really happened here, this is that feeling. They weren't making a Death Note movie, they were making a movie that happened to have the Death Note characters in it
You can change stuff, but it still needs to BE that thing you are adapting at it's core, otherwise, why bother? They don't need Asian actors, they don't need to keep it 100% true to the manga (which is impossible since the manga literally can't fit into one movie and I also don't want them to make some trilogy or sequel bait us. I'm confident you can make a good movie out of the source material while cutting some fat and even outright changing some stuff for the sake of flowing better), but they need to UNDERSTAND the manga and UNDERSTAND the characters. Because faithful, or relatively faithful, adaptations can suck too. I mean, I can attest to what joey says about the live action Japanese DN movies sucking
It can be done with this franchise, I'm sure of it. Heck I honestly wouldn't mind them doing what they did with Edge of tomorrow (which was not only a good ass movie but was based off a manga) and not even attach the name "Death Note", but have a similar-ish premise of some genius dude getting the ability to kill people through supernatural means and just seeing where it goes with that and just take away basically all the lore. In fact, i prefer that because then we can say "huh, this reminds me of death note" but judge it on its own merits because its NOT death note, rather than be in the situation we usually are with anime movies where we don't give the movie the time of day because the main characters aren't Japanese or that they changed names of characters or something. Distancing themselves from the source material is probably the single best thing the directors of a manga/anime adaptation can do in my opinion. Especially in cases like this…Joey says the changes here were made, generally, to reach a broader audience and that this wans't a movie made for Death Note fans. I get that, I understand that, I agree with that…then don't fucking call ti Death Note, because all you are doing is alienating the one guaranteed group of people who would have checked it out on name recognition alone.
This just troubles me so much because not only am I a Sherlock Holmes fanboy, but one of the biggest issues with adapting anime and manga is that the visuals are often a large part of the product, and Death Note, aside from the shinigami (another reason to not call it Death Note and just use the basic premise, not needing to have the shinigami there which imo will always either look jarring if they try to copy their looks 100%), doesn't have a lot of "out there" visuals. This is SO easy to adapt in theory because it takes place in modern day normal earth and using the Death Note doesn't cause any weird psychedelic light shows or anything. There's nothing visually "weird" about DN. So little would be required for special/visual effects. Out of basically all supernatural manga, its probably the easiest and most realistic to adapt without fucking things up.
LIGHTS SCREAM MADE ME LAUGH! IIT SOUNDS LIKE THE SCREAMING GOAT MEME
The netflix movie made me interistted in the anime. After I watched the movie, I watched the anime. So i guess it did something right
for any live action movies, I find that they're going to be pretty bad, theirs no way you can cram chapters and chapters of manga into a movie without missing major parts or not enough time for real character development.
and as joey says I always ignore the original source when watching since it makes them more enjoyable and way easy to find some good things about what the directors did/changed
for this movie though, I didn't find it to be that bad, I've seen worst.it was just a great cringy laugh that shouldn't be taken seriously. yeah, it was just all over and changed a lot but it was funny and had pretty good acting and ryuk was done amazingly.
10:33 “his core personality-“
applecore rolls out
ahh- I see what you did there XD
Don't forget, Korea has their own Death Note :p
Hated the movie. Loved your video. You make some fair points.
@TheAnimeMan would you like a sequel to this movie?
I haven't seen it. Don't wanna cuz Ryuk scares me
the personality changes were my second biggest issue with the "adaptation" the first being….WHERE IS THE FRICKING POTATO CHIP?!?!?!?!
If the Netflix Death Note movie was made originally and the anime or manga didn't exist, it would be viewed much more differently, inspire new ideas, and be praised as one of the most badass mixed-genre movies to ever exist. But other than that.. The movie is just.. Eh, I don't like it at all, but I still enjoyed it. I guess that is what everyone is saying here.. XD
The problem is not that they didn't make a copy-paste adaptation of the manga, but that the movie is shitty in general. I'll keep to the anime/manga xD
I have never seen death note, so Now I will watch movie first then the show and then just think one word: How? And Why?
I don't wanna watch the movie, so I avoid it while finding stuff on Netflix.
But just from looking at clips, Ryuk and L give the best performance. Mia (Misa) and Light were just…. lovesick pussies.
I watched it with my mom, who has never even heard of death note, and she liked it…
;-;
The Japanese live action movies are a lot better than the shitty netflix version.
You are so right. Aki shat all over the film before it even came out oml
Probably not going to watch the sequel when it comes out. The original made me want to slam my head off a wall repeatedly…
i didn't watch the original death note but i did watch the movie and. actually didn't really hate it
Every video, I see more cowlicks in the hair, and get more distracted.
I can't fully agree with you. Yes I understand that you need to change things from the source material in order to make the movie appeal to a… well, movie audience. But that doesn't excuse all the changes the movie made
Wait a sec the musical may have a simplistic plot, but at least it got the characters right! LIke Where Is Justice and The Way Things Are, at least that's Light and L!
Netflix should have made it into a series instead of a movie, they could have added so much more dialogue and made it so much better… Basically just imagine the anime, but live action…
So wait…you want to modify a story that doesn't appeal to people, to now appeal to the very people it doesn't appeal to?
…
…
…
Dafuq kind of logic is that?
Shit, why didn't they just remake Carrie if they wanted a movie set in high school in which one underdog gets supernatural powers and goes on a murdering spree? Because that is what the 'adaptation' is, however that is not what DEATHNOTE is.
This was worse than the dragon ball movie. Fight me.
This was a business move on Netflix's part, i don't think that they were banking on Death Notes success.( we can see from other productions that they know how to handle films) I think that Netflix did this to create an uproar and outrage by doing so they generate hype for the original series as everyone who hasn't seen the anime would want to find out where all the passions coming from. this perfectly coincides with your theory that Netflix is trying to comer the anime market in the streaming environment ?
the movie was never meant to succeed it was only meant to introduce people to good anime…
Oh my god …. the movie is terrible
Everyone's listening to what he's saying and I'm just hypnotized by his amazingly bouncy hair..😂😂😂
WHERE THE FUGG IS NEAR
‘Deathnote senpai’ I lost it
Ryuk was one of the only things that I liked about the movie
Nothing about this movie is amazing its trash
Go watch E;R’s take on this.
I hate the movie I’m not gonna torture myself watching it..
I'd rather watch this movie than the cursed sonic movie coming out soon.
Me before reading Percy Jackson: The movie was great.
Me after reading Percy Jackson: The movie is shit.
Same context with Death Note, except I watched the anime before the movie.
Yeah. Movies adaptations (While having their good parts) are shit.
U know, Death Note did have a Recap movie, that literally consisted of 2 films, which recapped the show, with some new scenes, just as good as the original anime, and also there's the original Live Action 3 part series, while the ending was changed a lot, I think succeeded in telling the story better, so no just because they might be are trying to put 37 episodes into 1 movie does not make it bad, it's the directors choices that make it bad, a story can be written very well in a very short amount of time or long, the amount of runtime doesn't exactly matter, it's the direction that they choose in which decides whether something is good or bad!
*me browsing through my recommended; Hmnn let's see…. "Netflix’s Death Note Movie Is Amazing-" NANIIIIIII????????
I got spoiled when I was watching the anime. And it has something to do with episode 26…
Few minutes into it, ALREADY disappointed.
I really liked L's character, even though he's completely different from L in the anime, I feel like the actor tried his best to be like L. He's the only thing I like about the movie..
The actors did good for what they were told to play but the events that happened like L in public just makes me mad
I still don't understand why Misa's name was changed to Mia or why Light Yagami was changed to Light Turner
I am disappointed in you
The only reason I can think of for why they chose Seattle as the setting is because it has such a large Japanese population. That didn't really even come into play in the movie, but it's a possibility.
I’m proud that I’m one of the people who actually liked it from the beginning
Well guess what i watched the movie with my dad for the first time and i told him that the anime was awesome so will posibly be the movie..and guess what all i encounter was ULTIMATE DISAPOINTEMENT .. THAT MOVIE WAS SHIT even my dad laughed histerically saying that light was a big dumbass that reacted like a girl who just hit the puberty it was hilarious
My teacher attempted to watch the movie. She doesn't know anything about the plot, yet she STILL hated the movie so much she didn't finish it. She's gonna watch the anime now. It'll be her first anime lol
Yes, she doesn't really like girly stuff so she may not like shoujo anime, but she might enjoy the Death Note anime.
I can't wait to hear her opinion lol
The movie is a guilty pleasure. Sorry~ I keep watching to criticize n laughing at it.
The only good thing about this movie is ryuk
This movie for me is the room of anime adaptations
Is the death not movie terrible?
This video: well yes, but actually no
Wtf is that hair
You surprisingly make a point. BUT WHERE THE FUCK IS THE POTATO CHIP SCENE
i tried watched netflix death note 20 time and couldnt even passed through the opening, it was like my most beautiful life memory is being said by someone who is very bad at telling stories and more into sex and head explosion…. I had hopes about the movie beacuse i thought the netflix original adaptation was about taking the world and the death note together and making something new story like ryuke drop the book again after the original story…. but no, they just ruine it… the only best part was ryuke was good… some things are never to be remake, the art lives and dies with its original
I couldn't finish the movie, I just couldn't stomach it (and if anyone is wondering why I'm here much later, it's cause I only found the anime man recently and saw this pop up and wondered what Joey opinion was). Sure I admit that considering how much I enjoyed the original Death Note anime, I absolutely hated this movie. I will not argue that Joey made some great points though. That said, if I had to consider how to best make the movie suck less, while still adapting it to the US setting and themes. I would namely change how Light and L behaved, sure at first I thought I'd have an issue with L's actor, but then I remembered what Joey basically said, he's not the one who wrote the script. I had no issue with Scarlet Johansson playing the Major, but again that adaptation was still bad, not the worst adaptation of an anime, but still bad. So if the script was fixed so that Light and L are actually more accurate to their anime counterparts in personalities, than made a few other changes to best facilitate this alteration. It would've made it better, they don't need to get really heavy into all that Death Note does, but there should still be a good homage to that battle of wit.
Netflix: Hey..look at this cool death note anime…wanna ruin it?
Logic: I’m outta here
Stupidity: I’m in!
Netflix: okay let’s only watch the first episode of death note and then make a movie about it.
The rest was HISTORY
The only good thing about this movie for me was that it wasn't 2 hours long…
The movie was terrible the only thing that I didn't hate was Willem Dafoe as Ryuk that was great, the rest was terrible, they made Light a bumbling idiot and they turned L into a melodramatic dramaqueen, I wanted to smash my TV while I was watching it.
Omg I just imagined how at the scene Light sees Ryuk for the first time like every anime fan just bursted out laughing on the whole hall
Splish splash your opinion is trash
