Martin Scorsese's brutal crime drama The Departed received a leading four prizes -- including best picture and best director -- as the Florida Film Critics Circle announced its year-end awards Friday.
Forest Whitaker was named best actor for his portrayal of former Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland, while Helen Mirren was chosen as best actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen. In the supporting categories, Jack Nicholson won for The Departed, while Cate Blanchett was rewarded for her performance in Notes on a Scandal.
Miami-based filmmakers Billy Corben and Alfred Spellman (Cocaine Cowboys, Raw Deal: A Question of Consent) won the Golden Orange for Outstanding Contribution to Film for their continued dedication to South Florida's film industry. The Pauline Kael Breakout Award was given to Jennifer Hudson for her role in Dreamgirls.
Pan's Labyrinth won best foreign-language film and best cinematography.
The Florida Film Critics circle comprises 14 writers from state-wide publications.
